What parasites put my pet at risk?
Fleas and ticks stay active nearly year-round in Morgan Hill’s mild climate, and ticks show up on trails and grassy areas around Coyote Creek and the South Bay foothills. Heartworm is spread by mosquito bites and can damage the heart and lungs. Intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms are common too, and some can spread to people, especially children.
How does heartworm prevention work?
Prevention starts with a blood test to confirm your pet is heartworm-free, because giving preventives to an already-infected pet can be dangerous. From there, most pets take a monthly preventive that may also cover fleas, ticks, or intestinal parasites, depending on the product.
Does my indoor pet really need parasite prevention?
Yes. Mosquitoes get indoors and fleas hitch a ride on shoes and other pets. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends year-round protection whether or not your pet goes outside.
How often should my pet be tested and treated?
Most pets need an annual heartworm test along with monthly preventive medication. Your veterinarian will set the exact schedule for your pet.
