What conditions can a wellness exam catch early?
During a nose-to-tail exam we look for kidney and heart changes, diabetes and thyroid imbalance, arthritis, dental disease, lumps, and weight issues. Many of these are easier to manage when we find them before your pet shows obvious signs.
How often should your pet be examined?
Puppies and kittens under one year usually come every 3 to 4 weeks until they are fully vaccinated. Adult pets typically need an annual wellness exam. Senior pets often do better with a visit every six months, because a lot can change in pet years.
What to expect during your visit
- A calm welcome, with extra time if your pet is nervous.
- A full physical: eyes, ears, teeth and gums, heart and lungs, skin and coat, joints, belly, and weight compared with last visit.
- Questions about appetite, energy, and behavior at home.
- A plan in plain language, and time for your questions. Most visits wrap up in about half an hour, longer if vaccines or lab work happen the same day.

When should we come in?
The best time for a wellness exam is when your pet seems healthy. That is when we learn what is normal for your pet and catch small changes early.
What happens at this visit?
- We review history and how your pet is doing at home.
- A nose-to-tail physical exam.
- Vaccines, parasite checks, or lab work only if they are due, after a written estimate.
What to bring
Bring a short list of what your pet eats and any medications or preventives they take. If you have a puppy or kitten, bring any paperwork from the breeder, shelter, or rescue, and a fresh stool sample if you can, for parasite testing. You do not need to bring a full medical file if we already see your pet here.
